In the rugged northwest corner of Sumatra lies Aceh, a region famed for its coffee. After the eruption of Mount Sinabung in 2013 displaced many farmers, they rebuilt their lives in the Pegasing area, where the Asman Gayo Mill now thrives. Run by Asman Arianto, the mill sources coffee cherries from local farmers in the Pantan Musara community, with each producer tending to small plots of half a hectare to two and a half hectares. While classic Sumatran coffees are often processed using the Giling Basah wet-hulling technique, common due to the local climate, the Asman Gayo Mill stands out by producing fully washed, honey, and natural processed coffees. Arianto’s focus on quality processing and infrastructure aims to improve the livelihoods of local farmers by enhancing the value of their coffee.

This natural processed coffee, from Cup of Excellence winner Asman Arianto, offers vibrant notes of cinnamon, green apple and vanilla bean. 

Asman Arianto moved to Aceh in the early 2000s with a mission to support local farmers. He founded the Ribang Gayo Musara Cooperative, dedicated to raising incomes through better quality coffee and improved processing techniques. Today, the Asman Gayo Mill sources its beans from farmers who settled in Pantan Musara after the 2013 volcanic eruption, continuing to rebuild their lives and their community through the cultivation of exceptional coffee.
