 BARISTA - PORTLAND, OREGON

POSITION SUMMARY

We are looking for an enthusiastic individual to join our barista team at the Pearl, our flagship cafe in Portland, OR. Successful team members demonstrate excellent customer service and exceptional communication skills. We have a special focus on hospitality in a team driven, high volume and fast-paced cafe environment.

One year of specialty coffee, retail, hospitality and/or customer service experience is required, with availability on both the weekends and weekdays.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Excellent Customer Service  

  • Warmly welcome and engage customers with an emphasis on hospitality as they enter the store.

  • Provide customers with a warm, friendly and sincere attitude as we host their cafe experience.

  • Help customers decide on the right product by offering samples and responding to their questions with a sense of urgency and proficient product knowledge.

  • Promote thoughtful and engaging conversations with customers while using intuition to read and feed the interaction, revolving around coffee ideas and an open mindedness to all beverage experiences.

Drink Quality and Coffee Preparation

  • Consistently prepare and serve high quality coffee beverages in an expedient manner.

  • Maintain exemplary preparation and serving standards on a consistent basis.  

  • Participate in ongoing tastings and trainings to constantly hone your craft as a barista.

  • Demonstrate a consistent enthusiasm for preparing and serving coffee drinks in a fast paced, high volume work environment.

  • Facilitate coffee education and ongoing coffee dialogue.

  • Maintain an up to date knowledge of current cafe offerings and continue your education of product knowledge both independently and with the shop trainer.

Store Operations

  • Maintain a clean coffee bar and a safe work environment at all times

  • Reflect the utmost professionalism when handling money and customer care at all times.

  • Represent the company brand as respectfully as possible, using company standards and culture as guides.

  • Adhere to company dress code, self conduct, and health policies at all times.

  • Communicate effectively and have the ability to articulate coffee knowledge thoroughly.

  • Work collaboratively with team members daily to run a successful shop operation and help create a positive work environment.

Assistant General Manager - Portland

Position Summary—We are looking for an enthusiastic and dedicated Assistant General Manager to assist the General Manager in overseeing daily operations of the cafe, ensuring outstanding customer experience and product excellence, managing staff and maintaining a positive work environment with strong cultural boundaries. The AGM plays a key role as a lead barista and maintains a strong values-based leadership presence. If you're a natural leader with a love for coffee and hospitality, we'd love to meet you. We are seeking a full time manager averaging 32-40 hours a week to help our current team meet the demands of our high volume cafe. This position will be scheduled a minimum of 1-2 bar shifts with more as needed depending on staffing and the needs of the cafe in addition to off bar time for administrative tasks between the cafe hours of 7am-5pm and available for monthly inventory from 5pm-7pm. This role supports the bar team with troubleshooting in the moment as needed and is the next manager on call when the General Manager is not available.


Key Responsibilities

Leadership, Team Management, Onboarding, Operational and Administrative Organization 

  • Ongoing Team Management and Daily Leadership, Feedback, and Coaching

  • Leading and Collaborating with the Bar Manager and Weekend Manager on ordering, cafe organization, managing the specialty drink program, and building strong weekend team operations.

  • Assist the General Manager hiring, terminating, onboarding and training that stimulates strong cultural values, boundaries and professional development and assist in reviews and bi-annual check-ins. 

  • Continually focus on driving sales and improving store profitability. Maintain exceptional standards for quality assurance, team performance and guest experience. 

  • Help the GM with administrative tasks such as: scheduling for 20 employees, lead weekly meetings with an agenda and dashboard, manage budgets, maintain current permits and licensing, coordinate facility maintenance and equipment service, ordering and inventory. 

  • Help manage core Retail platforms such as Slack, Square, WheniWork, Google Drive, and maintain current store Operations binders.


Physical Demands & Work Environment


  • Able to work 4-8 hour shifts while standing or walking for extended periods of time.

  • Able to grasp, lift and carry up to 20-30 pounds as needed. 

  • Frequently required to use a computer and complete spreadsheet tasks. 

  • Constant and proficient means of communication such as observation, listening, talking, reading and writing.


Requirements

  • Leadership, team building and two years of management experience in Specialty Coffee, Food & Beverage and/or Hospitality required. 

  • 1-2 years specialty coffee experience preferred. 

  • Valid Oregon Food handlers card within 30 days of hire.

  • Willingness to work both week and weekend days with shifts scheduled between 6:30am and 5:45pm. Flexibility to cover weekend callouts as needed. Currently the weekend is supported by the Weekend Manager.
