The Villatoro family—Aurelio, Aracelli, Jenner, Rodin, and Crista—has been at the heart of coffee production in Hoja Blanca, Guatemala, for generations. Aurelio took over the family farm after completing his mechanic studies, and under his leadership, the business has thrived. In 2017, Jenner and Rodin, along with their cousin Dennis, purchased Finca Punta del Cerro, a farm nestled in the mountains of Huehuetenango. Their "Primos Unidos" coffee, meaning "Cousins United," reflects the unity of the extended Villatoro family, with contributions from cousins Miakel, Riner, and Milton.
Since 2005, coffee from the Villatoro family has been a cornerstone of our offerings, known for its consistently high quality. The family has expanded operations with the addition of the large wet mill at Punta del Cerro, which processes not only their coffee but also that of their cousins from nearby farms. This year’s "Primos Unidos" lot features notes of dark chocolate, dried dates, and honey, highlighting the family’s dedication to excellence.
Aurelio’s deep roots in coffee trace back to his childhood at Finca La Esperanza, his parents' farm in Hoja Blanca. After moving to the city to study mechanics, he returned home to take over the farm. Over the years, Aurelio has made significant innovations, such as building cement drying patios on the rooftops of family homes in the steep valley. His leadership has earned him multiple awards, including wins in the prestigious Guatemalan Cup of Excellence.
In 2008, when Guatemala was struck by the Roya leaf rust epidemic, the Villatoros, like many farmers, faced severe challenges. However, they persevered, implementing better farming practices and pest control measures to restore their crops and improve cup quality. Throughout these hardships, our relationship with the Villatoros has remained strong, built on nearly two decades of partnership.
Now, as Aurelio passes more responsibilities to Jenner and Rodin, the family business continues to evolve. New ideas from the younger generation blend seamlessly with their father's legacy. In 2024, we are proud to once again offer the "Primos Unidos" coffee, a testament to the hard work of the Villatoro family and their dedication to producing exceptional coffee year after year.
